Chief Byron Hadley is the second antagonist in Shawshank Redemption behind Warden Norton. He was played by Clancy Brown who is best known for voicing Mr. Krabs in the hit Nickelodeon TV show SpongeBob SquarePants.

Personality

Byron Hadley, played by Clancy Brown, is a very cruel and aggressive man who frequently abuses his authority by brutally beating inmates and sometimes killing them. However, he seemingly softens up to Andy a little when he offers to help Captain Hadley with his money. He even beats up Bogs Diamond, the head of "The Sisters" prison gang, after finding out that he had been raping and beating up Andy.

Later on, Warden Norton orders him to murder Tommy in order to keep him from proving Andy innocent. He is then arrested for this after Andy escapes with the ledger containing all the info about the corruption and the murders that Hadley committed.

In the book, Hadley is a minor character who retires a few years after receiving financial help from Andy, having narrowly survived a heart attack. He is also implied to be an abusive and controlling husband during his conversation with Andy, and he also never meets Norton.

Trivia

  • When cast for the role, Brown declined the offer to study real-life prison guards as preparation for his role, because he did not want to base it on any one person.
  • In the movie, Hadley was the lead guard until the end, whereas, in the novel, lead guards come and go. Also in the movie, Hadley was arrested, whereas, in the novel, he retired after a heart attack.
  • According to Red, "he cried like a girl" when he was getting arrested.
